Ask Andy your car maintenance questions!

FEATURED QUESTION:
What is involved with a Vehicle "Tune-up?"

ANDY'S ANSWER:
The word “tune-up” is often misunderstood. It simply involves changing spark plugs, replacing the fuel filter, and doing a fuel injector service. Though manufacturers differ on mileages, this service can save up to an extra 4 percent of fuel, which is another 10 to 15 cents a gallon. Not only will this help you save money at the pump, but it will increase the life of your car. Ask Andy another question»

TOP TIPS: SPRING INTO SAVINGS ... AT THE PUMP!

Gas prices are rising every week ... sometimes every day! But you CAN save money at the gas pump. Beginning with this edition, each Walker Tire newsletter will feature Top Tips for Saving at the Pump to help you stash some cash back into your piggy bank.

This Month’s Top Tip: Air Filters

Car engines use a tremendous amount of air – almost 12,000 gallons of air for every gallon of gas you burn. A dirty filter starves your engine and drops your fuel mileage by 10 percent – that’s over 30 cents a gallon! At Walker Tire & Auto Service the air filter is routinely checked each time you bring your car in for an oil change.

THE HIDDEN HAZARD

Spring time ...the time of year when robins come back again, flowers bloom again, and Americans take to the road again. It’s also the time of year when your tires could be at their most vulnerable and you wouldn’t even know it.

Pot holes – Old Man Winter’s final swipe at us – can throw off the alignment of your wheels. And when that happens, your tires wear unevenly. The more worn tread is especially vulnerable to puncture, splits, and other hazards which can ruin the whole tire, leave you or your family stranded on the side of the road, and cost you money you shouldn’t have had to spend.

According to the Car Care Council, “Knocking a wheel just 1/8 inch out of alignment can cause the tire to scrub the road surface the equivalent of dragging it sideways 28 feet for every mile it's driven. That can shorten the life of a tire by half or more.”

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security simply because your steering hasn’t been affected. Yes, pulling to the right or left is a sign your wheels are out of alignment, but pulling to one side or the other doesn’t always happen when there’s an alignment problem. The best way to know for sure and not risk having your investment in good tires wasted is to have a reputable auto service center check your alignment. Be sure to do it in the Spring, before you start putting more miles on your tires.

Walker Tire and Auto Service will check your alignment for free. If you need adjustments, use the coupon in this newsletter to get 20% off your alignment service – IF that service is needed. Remember, Walker Tire and Auto Service will never perform unnecessary or unauthorized service on your car.
